My house in France is from 1887 too... Very different architecture though... Walls are about 1 meter thick in some places lol

my old apartment had these. they open up for in the summer, the heat that collects near the ceiling can vent out.

Me too. There are so few really old buildings and houses in western Canada, and even fewer that haven’t been ruined in some way. Also money.
